I had the pleasure of working with him 25 years ago on a live-action / animation film entitled “The Girl in the Red Truck.” The girl in the title was played by Charles’s daughter Jill. It was a family affair indeed, as his son Monte co-wrote the screenplay. We’re standing in front of a prop cactus, created to serve as the home of the animated character “Spike,” Snoopy’s Arizona-based brother. Meeting Charles Schulz was one of the highlights of my career. (As for the glasses? Hey, it was the ’80s…)

    SMILE TRAIN GETS THEIR “HERO” on at TEMPE IRONMAN

    Tempe, AZ – You may know Iron Man as a superhero, but these folks are heroes in their own right by finishing in the top seven in the recent Ironman Arizona race. Pictured here are Ritch Viola and winners of Team Empower from Smile Train, a non-profit group dedicated to fixing cleft lips and other facial deformities in children. Each Smile Team member was encouraged to raise $5,000, but many went further than that. One team member raised over $40,000. As you can see, a great time was had by all and we were thrilled to be able to “finish” in our own way with these remarkable athletes!

    The sweet sound of music can be heard around the Vally of the sun, thanks to Jesse McGuire. Long time Phoenix resident and trumpet player, McGuire is known for his rendition of the National Anthem which he has played for Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan. Jesse also paid a moving patriotic tribute to those who were lost on September 11, 2001, by performing Amazing Grace at Sun Devil Stadium for the Arizona Cardinals, for which he received the Game Ball.
    McGuire has been the featured performer at numerous sporting events including the Daytona 500, NBA Finals,Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and his most notable performances were at the 2001 World Series, for which, he received a World Series Championship Ring from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks are currently on a four game winning streak!
    McGuire is also the 2010 recipient of the Copper Sword Award, presented by The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society.

    Of the many Fiesta Bowl events that take place in the Valley of the Sun, the Fiesta Bowl Parade is one of the most popular. Thousands of people lined the streets of central Phoenix on December 31st to enjoy the Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. The Tostitos parade entry, led by the Valley Big Brothers-Big Sisters participants highlighted this year’s nearly 100 entries, that featured floats, balloons, bands, equestrian, specialty groups and honorary participants, including the Grand Marshal, Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Distinguished guests included Senator Jon Kyl and his wife Caryll plus this year’s Legacy Award recipients, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Schubert (as pictured above).
